Does the mk5 use a different k03?
« on: 04 November 2012, 15:42 »
Just something that popped in to my head.
The mk5 gti uses a k03, but runs 200hp as standard. And easily 230hp mapped.

My mk4 Borg Warner k03 runs out of puff at 195hp max (well mines running 185)

Are they completely different units?

ive been thinking the same, looking at the two they look diffrent, the down pipe comes off the left hand side of the turbo instead of coming stragiht down, id be intrested to know why as you say one turbo can make 230, 240, but a k03 on a 1.8t can push 190,200
MK4 golf 1.8 turbo agu :)

Its not always down to the capability of a turbo, Its the whole engine design that can determine what power the turbo can produce, I don't know much about the mk5 or know enough technical stuff to go into detail but I suspect the mk5 being 2.0 already puts it ahead, The head will be of a better design and flow more as standard as well as the inlet and so on. The whole package works well.
Ive seen T3 turbo's used on fiesta and escort rs turbo's but they produce less power than when fitted to a cosworth. Its about the whole package and how it all works together.

The key is flow and the 2.0 flows much better which allows the turbo to produce power with minimum effort where as on a smaller engine the same turbo has to work much harder with more boost to force the air into a smaller area which can also cause a build up of heat due to the restriction.
Im sure there are other factors as well but my technical knowledge doesn't go far enough.

The k03 used in the mk5 and the mk4 are different. The mk5 k03 flows more lb/min than that used in the mk4. It will not be cost effective to try and make it fit, there are better turbo choices.
