My Gti's steering column started smoking this morning. Pulled over and turned off the engine. Steering lock came on and could not be released, so the car couldnt be re started.
Got the steering lock off but the switch must be knackered, hence the smoke and the fact that the key wont click through the normal ignition phases.
Questions I have is - The car is ce1 and i have a complete ce2 car sat on the drive. I can remove the whole column and swap over with the ce2 car by disconnecting at the u.j. I havent had a chance to have a look at the wiring/plug setup as its dark. Is ce1 and ce2 ignition column wiring the same? If its not is the column physically the same allowing me to swap the ce2 for ce1 wiring (once damaged wires are re spliced)?
If it works i can then swap the rest of the locks over from the donor car to use then use the keys from the donor car and i wont have to go through drilling the switch housing etc.
Let me know if anyones been through this before. searches show plenty of drilling the housing scenarios, but im trying to avoid that.
