Powerballs
« on: 01 November 2012, 19:00 »
No, not those things you attach to a drill to buff up your Paintwork, but hand-held gyroscope exercise device type thingies...anyone got one?

I first heard about them around 10 years ago, and got heavily into using them soon after.  Good fun, and highly addictive, especially if you know a few others who have them, and you can have little competitions.

http://www.powerballs.com if you don't know what I'm talking about.

If you do, what's your best score?

I got one about 5 years ago, great fun! big hit at Christmas!
I actually got mine because I had Tendinitis in my wrist (Cue the jokes) but worked wonders and have made a full recovery
The energy these things create is absurd, and yes, starting it without string is an art, but very rewarding
and 18k rings a bell, but its been a few years now...

I can tell you now that it wasn't 18k rpm...not a few years ago anyway.  There are ones now that'll go over 20k rpm however.  There are also ones that are spring-loaded...you just wind the rotor one way until it won't go any further, then release for an instant start.  "Autostart" they're called.

I spun mine for years, and got my arms into really good shape.  No RSI from sitting at a PC all day, no pains whatsoever...arms were in the best shape they'd ever been.  Stopped a few years ago and now have Tennis Elbow!  I really should start spinning again.

Yep, I read the stats on the website, and my claim was optomistic
Might have to go find it, and crank it up

Edit. Just found it, span it up, 9.5k! then the battery died in the LCD

I've got one from years ago. Really loud though! I've seen vids of people that could just flick the ball with their thumb to get it going... red string for me!

Hah, no, but that's not the first time I've been asked.  Was a time where every Forum I joined I'd go to the General Discussion section and talk about them, but then I was pretty into them.  I did kinda work for Powerballs.com for a while, updating the scoreboards and moderating the forums, and I got loads of free gifts - I've got probably 15 or 20 Powerballs up on a shelf not being used!  ;)

Plus I suppose it's the only thing I've ever been that good at.  Still top 25 in the World for the regular Plastic Powerball, (was Top 10 once), and I'm effectively 7th in the World with the Heavy Metal Powerball.
