Mk2 GTi 8v tunning.
« on: 14 July 2005, 18:10 »
I will be shortly taking delivery of a mk2 8v.

Its meant to be between 130 - 140 bhp (TSR fast road cam, and ported + gas flowed head, plus a few other bits).

What I want to know is am I gonna get much more bhp out of this engine without forced induction?

I already have a lightened and balanced flywheel lined up plus I'm gonna be stripping out most of the car.

[oops, can someone move this to garage forum]

yo, you'd be lucky to be getting 140 bhp from cam and head work unless its had a capacity increase. you would get a hell of a lot more with forced induction but its not just a case of bolting a supercharger or turbo on, you'd have to do some internal sorting. 8 valves have high compression pistons whereas you need low compression ones for forced induction for example. if you wanted to go down that route, you'd be better off buying a g60 lump and re-building that. with a few tweaks you can be knocking on 200bhp.

Ive seen and raced a highly modded 1.8 8v which was putting out 165bhp at the flywheel. I think that about as high as you can go before going down the larger capacity/forced induction route.

there are ways of making the 8v very nippy but the result is a poor drive when on the road... tbh u will not get big big hp and drivalbility as u have to use lairy cams etc to get the power....

2.0l bottom end gs2h induction modded afm vernier 4branch p&p this saw 154bhp on my old 8v.. it went really well and was smooth.

You'll have had some crazy cams in your Astra Pete, they make it go like chuff over 4000 rpm  but town driving is hairy to say the least :) :) especially if you have a paddle clutch in a mini lol.

Golfs are rapid anyway and look like they're doing 90 whilst parked outside your grans bungalow! You can tune them a lot it's more the money than the doing, just look at JV's TVR Golf for inspiration :0)

You could always get a 2.9 VR6 Turbo engine put in a mk2 Golf and watch it eat anything in it's path! there was a video somewhere.

or just buy a valver!!!

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

i have seen a mk1 with an 8v on jenveys wild 305 cam and obvious lighten balance 2.0l block etc and this made 219bhp but thats a race engine and sh!t on the road... its not all big big hp its power/weight ratio a mk2 at say 950kg with 150bhp is a good power per tonne.... if u can drive aswell (which helps) u will scorch many cars on the road u simply because they are so damn heavy now..

the one tv show i recall was jc from topgear running a 83 mk1 gti 8v vs all the hothatch line up of present... and thats inc 20vt's from seat and vw and all the french and italian oferings aswell... the result was the old timer mk1 kicked their arses... so dont worry about massive hp think sensible mods and weight reduction and u will have a fire cracker.
