going low on coils without helpers springs
« on: 28 October 2012, 20:49 »
Got some straightforward queries coming up as the car starts to really take shape.
Wen were fitting the coilovers this wkend coming i was considering ditching the helper springs and testing my theory that the car would go lower than iv ever gone before, and, i may be able to keep the spring platforms relativelyhigh up and gain a better ride quality with a more compressed spring so as it dosent bounce around so much.
Has anyone got an opinion on this as we do intend on getting extra-low, even if some steering and wwotnot has to be notched for clearance
Cheers

I don't quite understand what you are trying to say?  :embarrassed:

I would use the springs that come with the kit you are going to fit.......If you are going to super super low look at air. If you need to get notches then you will probably need air

hi mate  sorry i should hav been clearer
what i meant was,
where my front coilovers have the spring platform and main spring, well above there sits the smaller helper spring which takes up about 4" of the dampers length. well iv heard people mention removing them for extra drop, and that theyr only used wen the car is jacked fully off the floor to keep the main spring inplace.
so, in order to let the whole thing sit much, much lower would it work by ditching this helper spring?
and if i did that, would i, in theory be able to ajust ride height so as i could compress the spring more than usual so it dosent hang loose at full drop, therefore not be so bouncy and wallowy?
at least i think thats what im trying to say.
its not that easy to put into words, but maybe some peeps on here are familiar with this
cheers

Very very interesting.
Am now consideing some 3mil metal sheeting and new drill bits and fasteners to protect the undernieth!
God help us!

I have never really used coilies so don't know what you're talking about

I think I know what you mean, you could get polo top mounts to go 10mm lower. I would personally not adjust the coilies in anyway if I were fitting them... :undecided:

Ride is the same. The helper spring is only there to take up the slack when you jack the car up. I ditched mine for wheel clearance.

The helper spring compresses so its the same ride quality BUT if you are going very low then it will be a crap bumpy ride anyway and I have seen some people cutting the bump stops in half. Don't want to be sitting on those bumpstops.

Then you have driveshaft issues and might have to notch the chassis if you go crazy low.

Nice1, thanks for the input. Bumpstops may be on the list too then hey.
What i'll do is get the basics done for winter, then hit the rest all in one for spring/summer. (Probly trial fit the wheels asap, then just wait for the good weather)

Any other good tips or info mate?                    )
