is this an excuse to mod or not???
« on: 28 October 2012, 17:59 »
hello guys I have not posted on here for a while but have been browsing reguarly and have mainly been looking for a fault I have had with my mk5 gti but not found very much, so basically when i turn the engine on the radiator fan comes on straight away regardless of the outside temp but if i turn the air con off the fan also turns off.
So after a few people told me it was normal i couldnt believe it was so took it to a vw speacialist to which they also told me this was normal saying that the reason for it is that it is assisting the air con, so took it to another speacialist and they told me the same. So my last resort was to take it to a main dealer and pay £65 just for them to look at it!!! They have come back to me and said the small radiator fan is not working and so the bigger one is compensating for this and staying on majority of the time, now for them to fit a new one they want just under £600. So i wanted to no if a front mount intercooler replaces the fans or not because if this is the case i will just do that as i am going to start modding soon anyway so thought i could do this but am not sure as to whether or not it replaces the fans or sits underneith them?? Could anyone help me out any advise would be muchly appreciated

the intercooler and fan assemblies are two different things. there is a small and large fan attached to a radiator to cool the air con and an intercooler to cool the turbo, adding an extra intercooler will just mean that your turbo is super cool but not fix your fan issue as this is radiator linked

And in terms of the radiator issue, I had the same but my large fan also backed up. Be careful that the air con compressor is still working. If the fan had packed up then extra pressure due compressor was the reasoning I got. I also got told that the large fan is not linked to helping cool as that is solely for the engine, and the smaller fan for the air con system.
