OK - HELP!
I've got problems with my Non-PD Mk4 Golf GTTDI. Firstly, it isnt starting but its getting fuel (I'm pretty sure) - can be started using easy-start...
Once its started it seems to drive ok - but not for long. It only seems to drive OK if its accelerating - If I speed up to say, 50mph in 3rd gear, its fine - I can do this fast or slow, still have normal power. If I slowly start to decelerate and then try to accelerate again - I got clouds of a white smoke behind me and loss of power, revs slowly drop.
Then, if I dip the clutch and allow the revs to drop then left the clutch and accelerate, i've got power back, as soon as I let it decelerate again, smoke and no power. You follow?
It took me a while to realise that it only happened after after decelerating and worked fine after letting the revs drop..

So far I've checked:
Fuel comes out of the 'out' fuel feed at the filter (so its getting fuel?)
No Oil in header tank
No gunk on oil cap
Unplugged MAF (Still wouldnt start, didnt try driving)
No faults on VagCom
Did 'Output Tests' in VagCom on engine module - Glow plug relay clicked fine.
Doesnt start even when warm
Checked all visible boost pipes from under the bonnet, not been able to jack up yet...

I did some VAGScope-ing earlier - I had blocks 2,21,23 loaded and recorded RPM, throttle position and two mbar ('Absolute Pressure') measurements. The mbar readings increased with throttle position (in other words, when I booted it, the mbar increased) - This was the case when I had power, and when I didnt...
When I didnt, it showed that when I had no power, the revs were DROPPING slowly even though the throttle position showed I was accelerating.
This says to me that the turbo is spinning up when I boot it?

Hope there is enough info here for someone to help me! Need to get to work on Monday!
Thanks
Will

Oh my god...Sounds very strange.

Sticky VNT? You get power upto 50mph then slow down and go to accelerate again and you get no power and revs go up?....

As for the starting if your start motor fubared?   :undecided:

Very strange one.
Starts with easy start spray so not starter?
Revs go down when I put my foot down (after slowing down)

That is the actuator on your turbo which seems to be covered in oil. AKA f**ked. If your turbo has gone the oil could be in and around your turbo OR the oil feed to the turbo has split/gasket failed.

I imagine that will need to be removed and had a look at.

check your fuel pump timing fella, it might have skipped a tooth or 2. mine did this but just died whilst driving. plugged it in, nothing. did compression tests, no problems there. i set the crank and can to tdc and the fuel pump was about 1/8th turn retarded. hope that helps n good luck with sortin

Thanks. Ill get under it tomorrow night after work and look at the turbo.
What would cause the timing to jump? What sort of place could sort it? Take it its not something I could test/fix myself?
Ill try and upload the vagscope findings.

Well..After an eventful week of me writing off my mother in laws car (non-fault!) due to mine not starting...Ive made progress...
I found that the Fuel timing was realllly retarded.

I tweaked it and then too advanced:

Its now set to about 65...is this still too high? How close should it be?
It still doesnt start perfectly when cold (takes a little longer - When warm its no problem...)
Drives MUCH better.

Thanks
