25th Anni replacement..
« on: 26 October 2012, 20:15 »
Hi guys,

Well regrettably I've had my 25th Anniversary written off by a hit and run driver. He drove straight into the front of me and then drove off hitting another 3 cars in the process. Basically the force of the impact was that great it's sheared one of the engine mounts, dropping the engine pulley side, the result it needed a short motor along with the need for new steering rack, bottom arms, track rods, and so on. Bodywork wise it only wanted a wing believe it or not! Insurance viewed it as an uneconomical repair so I've had to wave goodbye to a 43K mint 25th (sad times)

But onwards and upwards as they say..

So i've got my payout on the way, and I'm looking into a suitable replacement. At the moment I am swinging between an Edition 30 or the R32. Although I also have a bit of a soft spot for the new Scirocco (if I could come to live with the rear end) Now I have about a 13k budget fingers crossed. I'm off to view an Ed30 tomorrow with 25K on the clock. Not much spec over standard other than Xenons http://www.ianmartinautos.com/used-car-volkswagen-golf-hatchback-10010 Your thoughts on this?

I know nothing about the MkV other than what I have read looking through posts on here, etc. Is there anything in particular I should be looking out for? I've had a skim through the search and found a few common faults as with most of the marks, just wanted a heads up about anything in particular I should look at..

The R32 has always been one of those itches I have wanted to scratch but I am trying to work out whether or not it's cost effective to run taking into account the cost of the road tax, servicing, and of course the petrol as I know the MPG can be pretty shocking sometimes.

So just wanted peoples thoughts really, I've looked all over for a decent spec Ed30 but have come to no joy as of yet. I know sometimes it's best to wait until the right one comes along (It took me 6 months to find my 25th)

Any suggestions very welcome :)

Mike

Well had a good chat with the seller, and he's said it's mint, apart from one tiny mark. His own words were it just needs cherishing. So fingers crossed he is true to his word. Price wise is it on the money?

Start with the base model you can and that looks a great example, nice colour too.

You can then have the fun of retro fitting the bits you won't to add, most are fairly straight forward with coding and you would already have the Xenons which is one of the trickier jobs from what I can understand.

Definitely looks worth a viewing and test drive.

Know exactly what you mean about the R32 though  :lipsrsealed:

If it were me, go for the r32, what better opportunity will you have than now to purchase one. Get one, with a yeas tax if you can to soften the blow. My gti does about 20mpg around town, I can't imagine the r32 being much worse.

On another note, that ed30 looks lovely and has the high line dash and steering wheel remote which in my opinion, means a lot.

Good luck dude

I Just paid the same money for 2008 5 Door Edition 30 with 27k and similar spec and warranty, just serviced, tax, mot etc.

That looks very smart though.

Also considered the R32 but aprat from the noise the Edition 30 seemed superior every where else.

At 27k my car is spotless, looks as if it has just come out the showroom. Very much like this one.

Drives very well, very tight and no rattles.

Good luck

I think it's bang on the money, it's in mint condition and a lovely looking motor. If you can do a deal at £12.3-£12.5k and get a free tank of V-Power out of old 'Ian Martin' then I think you'll be laughing. Good luck with the proposed purchase.

Ps. Sorry about your Anni '25'.

Thanks for the input guys :) very much appreciated..

I didn't go for it in the end, it was a lovely car and in fantastic condition but two areas arose my suspicion. The NSF rear quarter had what appeared to be a slight bit of corrosion/paint defect under the paint. And The OSF rear quarter the paint was cloudy in appearance in sunlight with sand marks in the filler cap indicating possibly some previous paintwork. The drive was great, First time I have driven a DSG and see what the hype is about now :)

But it just didn't feel right, if you know what I mean. Usually you know when you drive a car if it's the one or not and this one just wasn't to be I guess..

So the search goes on

p.s. I would get the r32... superior in every way.
