What turbo does a Mk5 Golf GTi have?

Mine's the standard KO3, with the waste gate rods closed up a bit and a custom map, along with a host of other mods. It's good enough for me to be honest. It's at the 300bhp mark as it is currently and whilst it may do with a slight improvement in mid range torque, without making a multitude of other mods it's not really possible. Plus which the turbo isn't under too much stress, it spikes at about 20.4psi, holds at 17.2psi to 4,500rpm and then drops off to about 14.1psi to the redline.
I could go out and buy a KO4, HPFP, WMI, Quaife Diff etc and spend another £3,000-£4,000 and end up with a 450bhp Golf. But to be honest I'd rather sell up, buy an M3 or a Golf R and get it remapped and stick a shiny zorst on it!

Sounds like a nice build dude. So what mods are you running if you don't mind me asking? Have you had it on a rolling road?

Maxxeh's build is an epic one for sure, but to be running 400bhp+, of which I'm not overly sure how much is usable you need to add - HPFP, WMI, KO4, LSD, Uprated Injectors, Uprated Valves, Uprated Clutch and more. It's a great project if you've got a spare £8,000+ (I haven't  )

Hurdy's ED30 was running at 370bhp before he added a 100bhp Nitrous shot. I love to read about all these builds and in a way it has increased my own propensity to want to continue upgrading and upgrading and upgrading, but where does it stop? For me spending £3k on the initial modifications along with the extra running costs that comes with such a build is enough.

But if you've got money to burn, then get it on it, like a car bonnet!

Modifying a car is a very personal thing. The more you do to it, the more you become attached to it.

I got this with my ED30 and even though the fwd set up restricted use of most of the power, it was still great fun to drive.

The K03 is a great turbo and has decent scope for performance gains and suffers almost zero lag. For a fwd it is a superb match. The K04 is also a superb piece of kit. It just adds a tad more lag, but big power gains. Ultimately for a fwd car it becomes the owners personal preference and depth of pocket that determines how far the power curve goes!

Big turbo conversions are awesome, but yet you have to console yourself that the power and moves further up the rev range with each increase in the turbo size and lag also becomes more prevalent. Then you have to consider the amount of throttle you can deploy in any given stretch of road otherwise the car becomes more of a missile than a car if you get it wrong and not a guided missile either!!

For 90% of people a well modified K03 GTI is more than enough to make them happy, 8% would be happy with a modded K04 and then there's the 2%, who are certifiable! Lol

Nicely put and ties in with my ideology too. I think ultimately if your 'project' is also your daily drive, then it comes down to money and how much you've got at your disposal. As Hurdy correctly identifies, the KO3 suffers from pretty much zero lag. So if you want a 160mph+, 0-60mph in 5.0-5.3s Gti with only a KO3 and you don't want to spend much more than £3k, then it's ideal.

Also for me personally if I used my car as more of a track car, then I would probably continue to mod and mod and mod, till the cows came home or I went bankrupt 

Hurdy and Maxxeh definitely fall into the 2% category. Although at least now Hurdy has an 'awd' car that can cope with 450bhp+ without turning into an unguided missile  And with the 'R' you really up the steaks in the modding game. With 0-60 times being churned out sub 4s and 1/4 mile stretches done in 12s, you really are in another league.
