My 9 year old son is vw mental today he changed the plugs oil air filter etc on my mk3 gti. obviously watched by me but holy sh!t im impressed. He has recently been saving his pocket money/my money and sold his quad.His plan is to buy a vw that we can do up for when he can drive. I have found a mk1 gti conv on ebay for £450 am i being an utter knob buying it for him. Or should i let him do what he wants and enjoys, i am thinking yes if thats what makes him happy i have the room he has the money. I know ten years is a long time but it will be fun trying and if not i have another vw.

  use your money then if you want another vw tell the wee man to keep savin an defo tell him to keep helpin you then when he passes his test he has a few quid towards a new gti

I haven't got kids but I know 100% I would do that!! You will have years of memory's of building a mk1 golf but obviously mostly spending time with each other.

I didn't see my dad that much as a kid. He left for work at 06.00am and wouldn't get back till 20.00. My bed time. But we would spend time together on weekends changing the brakes or going for drives in his 3.0 ford Capri.

Its a great idea! Doubt the car will last until he passes his test, but once its all in good shape, you can sell it on a buy another. That will give him more experience too, and drag out the man time!

My kid did my plugs at 8 but he likes gocarts which is more inline with his age, rather have him learn to driver on smaller stuff, so you can progress up naturally, I've always got scared he will go joyriding because he can so filling his facination with smaller cars at his level?
I did have a scare once when I was under the car and came back to a small job and he was under there without me knowing watch them closely thats all I have to say!

Buy an old mini put a roll cage in and send him racing ministox when he is 10.  Much more fun than just fixing up a rusty old car that he can't afford to insure when he's 17.
