Cutting out!!

The car isn't idling right and keeps surging up and down the revs sometimes cutting out!

Then wen slowing down if I put the clutch down to change gear the car cuts out and then kicks back in when the clutch is lifted!

Any ideas what's wrong

Geoff a bit more info what car blah blah....
Plus try using search function:
 stalling
Cutting out
rough idle

It's an '88 8v GTI.
