rear brake discs

hi i gotta change my rear brake discs on mk4 2.0gti, do  i need a wind back tool ??

Yes you will need a wind back tool.

You can do it without one but its difficult. Got to apply pressure to the piston while screwing it in.

Its one of those tools you don't use often but having the right tool for the job makes all the difference, I picked up a Laser one fairly decent quality and wasn't too bad a price.

Excuse me for jumping on your thread but i got my pads and disc's, just gota fit them. My plan was just
to remove the brake fluid cap and jag a screwdriver between old disc's and pads and force the pistons back in

I know it sounds abit cowboy time but can it be done this way?

On the rear calipers you have the handbrake mech, there is a cam mechanism thats cable operated anyway it winds the piston in and out when you operate the handbrake, if you just push the piston back in instead of winding as you push it you'll most likely damage the mech inside caliper and the caliper will need replacing or rebuilding.

For the sake of a couple of quid buy the right tool for the job.  It makes it 100 times easier, trust me.  I got the tool of eBay for beer money and it was good enough to allow me to change the discs and pads on my mk4 within a couple of hours (Don't ask, the old ones had been on there for a looooooong time!).
