abs light coming on
« on: 17 October 2012, 21:21 »
Last friday cominng home from work my abs light came on shortly after setting off. turned engine off but couldnt start again cause battery was flat. got jump started. everything fine.

Again today the light came on droped a gear so the revs increased and the light went off. again fine rest of way home.

am i right in thinking that this could be a alt/battery fault meaning low battery not able to power abs?

Havent had chance to test alt/battery. gonna get a drop test on the battery this weekend anyway.

but any help apreciated. ideas?

I've known jiggered batteries to cause all sorts of mad problems including radge engine management codes.

Best bet is to test the battery, scan for codes, then work from there.

I would advise against a drop test.  It's quite primative and may well kill your battery if it isn't already gone.

This may concern you slightly but check the fuses on top of the battery very carefully.  One there can cause the abs light to come on and is connected to a problem with the wiring.  One is known to crack instead of blow through and can melt the alternator loom and the fuse holder.  It can also start an engine bay fire in severe cases.  Best to get it checked asap.

Hi
How many wires can you see going to the brake pedal switch ?

If the brake pedal switch was faulty it would be a really easy fix.  Easy enough to spot as well whether it was through flashing glow light or dodgy rear bulbs.  The revving making the light go out points to the battery top fuses.

For a battery test if you go to a local motor factors you can have a test done with a cell tester which doesn't need to do what the drop test does.  A drop test can easily deep discharge a battery and some batterys never recover full charge from it.

Check your alternator for voltage first, then do what everyone else has said.
