Heater Matrix Replacement
« on: 12 October 2012, 14:16 »
Hi guys, just needed some advice please.  I have managed to find the leak (mk2 8v GTi PB code) of my coolant to be coming from the heater matrix. So.......

Release Valve

Am I right in saying that MK2's had a pressure release valve fitted on one the pipes going in (or out) of the matrix under recall?

If it is not there, should I have the work carried out or just leave as is?  Wonder whether VW would still replace.....

Fitting

I have had a good look at some guides and does look a bit of a ball ache, but nothing that cannot be achieved with time.....and I am not paying for 5 hours labour thanks very much!

There are a couple of parts on GSF with one listed as "standard" and one listed as "premium" (£25 as opposed to £40 odd) is there going to be much of a difference?  Also seen a few people use the Mk3 Matrix, I would presume because it is more sturdy.  Anyone have advice on which one to go for?

Lastly any tips whilst removing/fitting that could trip me up or bite me on the bum?

Thanks
Rob

yes get the premium one. the cheap one will fail in no time

the mk2 items listed by GSF will be the same as mk3 items and mk4 item. so just get the better quality part

you dont need the bypass valve with the new matrix's it was only with the standard original matrix part that these where needed for.

Thanks Gambit.  I was veering toward the premium part.  Might see if Unipart do one as they are round the corner.

If the bypass/release valve is already fitted what should I do?

Thanks

If the bypass valve is already fitted, just replace it with some copper tube or source some replacement hoses.

As for fitting, from doing it recently I'd definately say leave the control cables attached to the box when removing. Otherwise you'll refit the box then realise you can't re-attach the cables with it in that position  :lipsrsealed:

Ok, thanks again.  I will check before I order the matrix and order a replacement hose if needed....hopefully it obvious whether it has one fitted or not

I presume the cables are the three for the heater controls and have a clip i need to release for each one?

Valves were fitted as a recall precaution, but can be taken safely out the system now, if fitting a new quality matrix that is!  they are now well up to the job of handling the pressure, like any other car...
