Advance driving lessons/course/test
« on: 09 October 2012, 08:14 »
Hi chaps,

After a bit of advice and feedback on the subject.

First of all my reasoning :

I've been driving for 9 years now, 7 of them in UK. I hold a HGV licence as well. I have only had 1 accident that was not even in this country and happened in the middle of the winter with about 4 feet of snow where a lorry suddey stopped and due to hard breaking I skidded, clipped the kerb and ended up in a ditch.

I don't think my driving is bad, I very rarely drive above speed limit and since my accident always try to adapt my driving to road conditions, however having learnt to drive on the opposite side of the road and the steering wheel beeing on the left I do sometimes find myself in situations where I don't feel 100% in control ie. narrow country lanes or sudden hazards. I've been thinking about those courses since few weeks ago when I had a near miss on the M20 where someone's bikes fallen of their rack and all the cars had to pretty much do emergency stop from 70mph.

Did anyone do any of those or has any experience of this company Driverskills - Advanced Driving Courses On-Road Advanced Driving Course [] - 169.00 : .

Do those courses really help and give the benefits like better mog, lower insurance etc ?

Cheers
Jack

I spent a day with these guys.  I drove around South Wales for the day on a varied mixture of road types.  My instructor was the retired Commander of SW Police Traffic Division.  it was provided by a previous employer, but I've had a look at this on their website:

It was very useful. Particularly when he told me where the mobile speed cameras are located.

Any idea how much the course cost your previous employer?

I think its kind of petered out a bit, as alot of insurance companies dont take it. If you have been driving a while over here anyway, I very much doubt it will make any difference to your insurance what so ever. Its more aimed at new drivers who dont have the experience on the road, and the instructor will pass on information/advice, without it being so formal. Obviously motorway driving isnt in the standard lessons/test, so it covers that to give new drivers confidence whilst travelling at speed. Save your money if I were you mate, there is absolutely no replacement for experience. Your already driving with caution which is a bonus lots of young idiots dont seem to care about, and put the near miss out of your mind as that was just a very unfortunate and uncommon occurrance.

Read this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roadcraft-drivers-handbook-Essential-Handbook/dp/0117021687

I reckon any half decent driver will be doing what this book suggests already, but you may learn something from it.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

This book is what all advanced driving courses would be based on. So just give it a read and put it into practice.

I did the advanced driving course with the IAM a couple of years ago. Did a few drives with the observer, and passed the test with the examiner (in my mk2!).

It was very much as I expected, although they did encourage slower speeds than I envisaged. Some of what they taught I didnt like, in particular the wheel suffling, but overall it was worthwhile. The best thing was having someone experienced evaluate your driving habbits and provide constructive feedabck so you can improve the safety of what you do.

I have since become more aware of hazards, and more cautious at times as a result. But being human, I have also had a couple of inctances of poor judgement too putting myself at risk, but thats down to me as an individual.

Most of us are confident behind the wheel, and are happy in how we go about driving a vehicle, its well worth having someone hold up a mirror and iron out any 'faults'. As a result of the course I can however be more nervous passenger!

The books/literature will go a long way to introducing you to anything your not already aware of, but a couple of drives with an observer would be worth it I think.

Gives you a slightly better chance when the roads get hairy!

i would recommend do a motorcycle course, as the hazard awareness i learned was invaluable to every day driving. stuff like looking thru a bend to see whether the kerbs are merging and are getting closer or further away tell you whether the bend/corner are tightening or opening out.
your all round vision and awareness of whats ahead especially in built up areas are far greater than a normal car only driver
