« on: 07 October 2012, 16:02 »
anyone done it? i'm thinking of doing my alloy vw 9-spokes black until i can afford some wide euro wheels :)

would i need to sandblast or could i just paint right on? i imagine it will take forever with wet and dry..  :undecided:

Depends on the condition of the current paint, if its good then you could get away with keying the surface then painting them.

Orbital sander to smooth the bad bits out , key the rest up with some 800-1200 wet and dry, primer -paint-laquer

As did I

I just sanded out the corroded bits to metal, and gave everything else a good key.

wow thanks for all the responses! :) so it looks like I can just sand down then cos they aren't in too bad nick. all your spray jobs look pretty good! did you spray the backs too? and any specific type of paint, is halfords spray can ok? what about laquer?

also what's keying? thanks! :)

It does not sound like you know much about paint and body, its not as simple as people are making it out to be.
If you only have paint scratches then you can sand them out with 180 and key(key means creating a grip for the paint) the whole surface. Then give four coats of primer and key with 600 for the finish.
But if you have deep scratches that touch the alloy there is no way your gonna fill them with paint, you will need body filler for those.

no I don't know a lot about paint and body that's why I'm asking on here.. I'm not too fussed on doing it 100% perfect, I'm more interested in learning and enjoying the process. thanks though that helps :)
