shaving 10mil from the hub face of my alloy
« on: 03 October 2012, 20:15 »
Guys guys guys
Can i safely shave 5 or 10mils out of the back of my alloy wheels where the hub face meets the cars hub face?
Or is that not advisable?

if you do then you will need to run spacers on the wheels or put the chamfer back on the centre hole, the reason the chamfer is there in the first place is to make the rim sit snug against the hub, my old mk2 rims had the inner face shaved down and when it was done i was told if i run without spacers it will cause the wheel do not be 100% flush on the hub and can stress the bolts so much they snap, i have 2 kids which come in the car with me most of the time and i didn't want to risk it, each to their own though

10mm would be too much to shave of and will weaken the wheel. id say you could really only go about 5mm tops of the bolt face and even that would be pushing it

if plenty of metal between bolt seat and new face it'll be fine,  how do you think the same wheel is avalible in diffrent offsets.

just need a reasonable size late with gap bed  plenty of them about,  and just re machene the chamfer on the wheel  no problem
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

I agree that a good machine shop will be able to skim the wheel and put the chamfer back on but i'd like to think that the offsets found on wheels are acheived by the wheels being offset by whatever is holding the rim to the centre hub....

correct. The hub is the same depth no matter what offset. Hence shaving the hub face can weaken the rim if you take too much off. A good machine shop will tell if its safe or not

if it was a simple as made out do you not think itd be more common practise seeing as itll only cost around 80 tops to get 4 wheels skimmed

Good comments guys. , ther'll be some right royal messing around to get 8" rims with a 15mil offset onto my golf, such as arch rolling, tyre stretching and possibly 5mil off the wheels.
Gratefull for the input guys,
Cheers

i can hire an arch roller for £25 a day and have a heat gun and some advice for how to do it but the downside is you would have to do it on my drive as i can't let it out of my sight, i'm just up the motorway a touch past botany bay, PM me if you wanna have a do at it
