what to do with the golf...
« on: 02 October 2012, 20:45 »
took my mk3 cab in to the garage today to get the gearbox replaced.
well its well n truely f**ked
the mechanic has put the new box on, then taken it apart again as reverse wouldnt work, now hes realised the box is knackered and i owe him loadsa money for working on it ALL day and my car is in bits and i cant get it back
I could literally cry. He said the only thing to do now is rebuild my original box which will be £300+ and i simply dont have that sorta money on top of the labour for all day today.
This is just my luck, after all this money i spent on a 2nd hand box and all that labour i could of got the box reconditioned in the first place, lesson learned not to try and save money by buying 2nd hand parts!
Im getting a quote to rebuild it in the morning but anyone know a general cost? It has the reverse gear idler problem so not sure if it all needs rebuilding or just reverse.
Probably going to have to sell it after all this to pay off my credit card

I would've thought that another s/h box would be the cheapest option, maybe someone on this forum can help.

yeah but what if i buy another 2nd hand box and that is also no good? its really common for these boxes to have rubbish reverse gears so dont want to be a plonker twice!

Have a look through the classified/breaking section, there are quite a few forum regulars who break mk3's and are probably a lot less likely to stitch you up.
Did you get any sort of guarantee with the broken box or was it 'sold as seen' maybe try contacting the seller to see if they might replace it with another one.

I doubt you'll get a refund as the box is s/h and therefore an unknown quantity, i know its not much help but for parts like g/boxes and engines etc its usually best to get them off a car that can be driven and tested.
See if you get a response from the seller first before lodging a complaint as i doubt he'll be too forthcoming once he gets a claim against him.

its ok i had to open a case to get him to respond, he seems ok though and i hope a miracle happens and perhaps he will be nice and refund me but ive not been aggy as I know it was a risk.
just gutted its one that hasnt paid off and now ive got a huge amount to fork out and may have to sell the car.
anyone know any places selling recon boxes that deliver?

they are different boxes and both have knackered reverse anyway.

I bought a race engine through PayPal and when it arrived the crank case was damaged from the chain coming off.

Cutting it short I opened a case on PayPal saying I wouldn't of bought knowing that it was damaged as its possible there's internal damage from chain coming off. I got a fall refund but lost £25 for the return post.

If you bought it thinking it worked, or that seller said it was ok then you will get a defund.
