So then - depression. Anyone have/had it?
« on: 02 October 2012, 20:13 »
As above, what have been your experiences with it and how have you come out the other side if at all?

Sorry for a serious post for once  :lipsrsealed:

I'll kick off then.

I was prescribed Fluoxetine and took it for a month. Came to the conclusion that I was unhappy rather than depressed, and didn't like the strange way the Prozac made me feel, so stopped taking it.

My INTJ personality type didn't help as I analyse and think about things/everything way too much.

Ask "Mountains" perspective...He wanted to top himself, although he told the Police otherwise when they knocked on his door after I dialled 999 last New Years Eve.

I can understand that it can be a difficult subject to talk about.

I was diagnosed with moderate depression today hence my questions.

For me it has been building up for around 18 months with my wife having possible thyroid cancer which thankfully was only an adenoma, still scary though as it affected her in a really bad way; mimicking post natal depression and generally messing with her head

Then my own skin cancer scare which was drawn out for months before I was given the all clear. With that my oldest is being a complete nightmare (she's nearly five) and I'm just generally feeling crap about myself at work. I now can't sleep more than around 3 hours a night as I'm thinking about stupid things and I'm very restless, irritable and generally a complete batard most of the time.

Going for a full blood test tomorrow to see if anything there could be the source of the problem then back to see my doctor next week for results and possible counselling/drugs depending on what we think would work best. It's going to be a long slog but I'll get there. I'm not at the suicide stage and I don't think I will be, dying scares me as it is so I wouldn't want to bring it forward lol

I suffered pretty badly when my first marriage broke up 12 years ago, the mistake i made was taking fairly heavy anti-depressants and hitting the bottle at the same time, i was signed off work too so i pretty much crashed and burned for about 6 months and to be honest the drugs didn't work for me as it was family and friends who got me back on the right road but i have a close relative that has just started on A/D's following a bereavement and they are working well for her.
I'm happily married again now and have a pretty good life but i still get days where i just can't drag myself out of a feeling of doom and gloom but they pass and i've found that just communicating with those around you brings everything out in the open and then the problem is shared, i'm lucky i've got some great people around me but its taken time and patience to get here.

That's the thing, apart from my missus and sometimes my parents I don't have a great deal of people to talk to about general day to day stuff so it just backs up.

I've always said the usual thing about people with depression "what the hell have they got to be depressed about" now I know

Might be worth trying to get some counselling as having a good talk and getting things off your chest can help a lot, depression is a bit like a trip switch in your brain that goes when it reaches a limit as to what it can cope with and its different for everyone, most people can sail through life dealing with whatever is thrown at them but a lot of people struggle with depression and don't even realise it, the worse thing to do is nothing as there are so many different solutions that mean you don't have to suffer.

And that, was a good job well done! He wasn't to know that the Police would turn up, anymore than we didn't know that he was "Joking"

This very Forum helped me through some incredibly difficult times last year, most knew nothing about what was going on, but were equally important in keeping me sane!
The few that knew, kept low key, but were only a phone call away.
Never underestimate the power of Internet friends

Unfortunately many have been there -but on the up side it means you're no the only one and other can relate / help you out through their experiences !  My wife is suffering again whilst pregnant  I also had depression and was on Fluoxetine for about 8 months.

Start Exercising, especially in a sociable environment i.e go for a run/cycle with a mate and get the heart pumping - have a good chat while you out there with them.

Start a diary or blog (even if it's anonymous) and rant / blow off steam that way, it helps.

Everything may seem like a major issue and hard to work through, but keep persisting and you'll get there.

oh and one last thing
