broken alternator

Hi there, driving home this morning in my mk3 golf gti i noticed the battery light flashing, the alternator belt was squeling at low rpm the night before so thought nothing of it and would take to my local mech. any way 2 mins later my temp guage started rising and temp light started flashing so i immmediatly pulled over, opened the bonnet and to my surprise the alternator had actually snapped its bracket! i let the engine cool for 15 mins. it started fine and thought ill start the 20 mile journey back home, keeping a sharp eye on the temp guage which sat at 2/4 all the way home if it had risen i would stop and let it cool /crawl home. didnt fancy walking!any way i made it home. ordered new alternator and started car up just now it started fine and sounds normal, only thing is coolant level seems to have gone down. does this sound like i got away lightly from an overheating prob or could there be more than meets the eye!!! any knowledge/ feedback of this experience i would be v gratefull.

Sounds like headgasket may have gone. Is there oil in the water, or water in the oil or white smoke coming out of the exhaust?

Ye i'd got with this too,
Its happend to me before, When temprature rises, it tends to throw it out in the form of steam, so just fill it up, and keep an eye on it for a few days.
