Uprated bhp, uprated battery?
« on: 23 September 2012, 22:49 »
Having added 50% more bhp than standard to my Gti. I was wondering whether or not I need to upgrade the battery. If so, can someone recommend a decent one.

I replaced the original one at my last service some 4,000 miles ago. Because the other one was duff after a test. I immediately noticed that the electronics seemed crisper and starting was more immediate. Now after 4,000 miles I've noticed the same intermittent sluggish starting procedure. I occasionally listen to the radio/cd with the car not running, usually only for a maximum of 30 minutes a time and I never really do short journeys, so it has plenty of time to recharge.

Any ideas?

There isn't a problem when the car is running. It's just sluggish at start up. Sometimes it's immediate, sometimes there's a two second delay.

How often do you use the car?

Does it have any aftermarket electronics on it?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Sounds like something's got a current drain on the battery then.

What causes current drains in Golf5s?  Any common faults?  You'd need to ask in the sub-forum, as I have no idea, but you're experiencing classic battery drain IMO - often caused by aftermarket alarms, or stereos.

Battery should not need uprating, unless you've installed some gay soundsystem, or something.

Can't help you here. Definitely no 'gay' sound system as you eloquently put it, nothing at all in that respect.

Thanks again for paying an interest though. I'm not sure if it's a drain or not, or whether or not its stater motor related, because as I say, sometimes it turns over immediately and sometimes it just requires a couple of seconds.

So get the starter checked over by an auto-electrician.

Increased BHP will not require a more powerful battery.
Have you got a multi meter/volt meter? If you have then you can do a basic test to see if you have a battery drain. Might also be worth getting your battery tested, new battery can still fail

Will do. Is it simple enough? Will my step dad who is a sparky be able to do it, or will it require auto tooling?
