Get the 18-105 which is the kit lens for the better nikons, they are pretty cheap and auto focus.

Ill see if thet have one here!  Is that a sigma. Tokina?

I might judt upgrade from the d3100 depending what deals they have on  :smug:

if you want a wide angle lens the tokina 12-24 f4 is a cracking lens and not to much money to buy second hand not sure if it'll auto focus on your camera though .

for a weekend in prague the tamron 18-270 is a great walk round lens all though a bit slow vibration control works well i regret selling mine as it was really handy when out and about

It's all about the focal length numbers.
Kit lenses are generally 18-55mm. 18mm is the wide end of the lens. If you want something wider than the kit lens you'll need something with a shorter focal length. IE the Nikon 12-24mm.
But if you want something cheaper than that Nikon, try looking at a Sigma 10-20mm lens, it will be much cheaper (prob £3-400) and still good quality.
However, the 18mm end of your kit lens is probably good enough for most photography situations.

Your Nikon D3100 is a good enough camera, sounds like you could do with investing in some better quality lenses first before upgrading the camera.

Once you've sold the Sigma, look at buying something like a nice prime (fixed length) lens, like a 30mm or 50mm with a nice wide aperture (f1.8 or f2.8) which will give you some quality glass to take photos with.

The limiting factor is the lack of the auto focus motor on the D3100, If you want an ultra wide get the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 II the second generation adds better optical quality and a built in motor meaning it will work with the D3100 as well as the bigger bodies with their own motors.

If you want a do it all lens the 18-200 is spot on, optical quality isn't the best (as in not as good as say the 24-70 f/2.8 or 70-200 f/2.8) it's more than good enough an as good as (if not better) the kit lens.  18mm is pretty wide and 200mm on a crop is pretty long.

If you want a prime then I'd recommend the 35mm f/1.8 I've got that and the 50mm f/1.4, the 35mm on a crop basically gives you the same field of view as your own eyes (not the peripheral) so what you see is basically what you get.

As said though, depends on what you plan on shooting.

Got £30 for the lense  £40 loss  :lipsrsealed: but it's better than gathering dust!

I'll buy a wide angle lense eventually!
