replaceing front housing on water pump
« on: 21 September 2012, 16:20 »
Hi, just looking for some advice, found out today that engine noise coming form my golf gti 2.0 8v is coming from the water pump. so went I have bought the front housing as it is the pulley that is moving. been searching through but can only find guides on how to replace the whole system, can someone give some guides to replace just the front housing. It has a/c. I am kinda thinking If remove the front belt that goes round power steering and water pump. I should be able to undo the housing and pull this out and just replace. is this write or is there more to it?

Thanks for any help in advance
Chris

Ps I know that in reality it's not going to be easy lol

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Do you mean you want to replace part of the water pump?

Water pumps are cheap providing you've already got a genuine VW one. New ones are £50 from VW and if you return your old VW one they refund you £45.00

To get access to the water pump

remove driver side front wheel
remove splash guard
remove power steering belt - there is an adjuster to release the tension
remove alternator belt - lossen the 3 bolts on the aternator and lever / push down on the unit (its spring loaded) to release the tension and remove the belt
Remove the two pulleys
Unbolt the alternator - don't lose the spring
Unbolt the plate / cover which the alternator bolts on to which covers the water pump

You know have access to the pump.

The part you have bought is the replaceable part of the water pump; the rest of it is just routing for the water.

Yeah you'll need to remove all of that to get the pump out. If you're confident with hand tools it'll only take an hour to an hour and a half
