Fitting bonnet/shut lines
« on: 18 September 2012, 12:02 »
Hi there, my new golf has had a respray and the bonnet has been put back askew, any tips for getting it to sit right as the shut lines are really bugging me! Have tried shifting it already but wanted to know if there's a technique or if it's just trial and error!

There are only 4 bolts o the bonnet... so play with them...

You might need to look at the wing bolts - but I wouldn't touch them if it's been painted & take it back to the paint shop for them to sort properly...

Set your gaps with the struts disconnected, and remove the striker pin from the bonnet,  the stuts will naturally want to push the bonnet forward when closed, so set the bonnet about 3mm further back towards the windscreen, once happy with the gaps, and height of the bonnet, you can refit the striker pin, so that it drops straight through the centre of the bonnet lock...
I'd also replace the washers on the hinges for new stainless items. as the struts put them under a great deal of strain

Cheers for the advice, going to have a play with it tomorrow! I cant take it back to the paint shop as it wasnt me who had it done, was previous owner (otherwise id be taking it back anyway because of the appallingly bad finish!)
