Those figures are rubbish for a start.
VW only made 150 RHD 16v Anniversary GTIs...yet there were 182 left, 5 years after they were produced?

Personal imports maybe?
Its the same issue with mk1 GTI campaigns as officially there was only 1000 made for VWuk (I have a copy of the offical letter)
But there were loads of personal import Pirelli spec ones about, so the figures were much higher.

I have an original brochure for the MK1 Campaign but I don't think it mentions numbers produced in it, so the 1,000 in the letter was obviously for dealers' eyes only!

So UK ED35 are running out then with Mk7 on the horizon so reasonable estimate will be less than 500 in uk?
