Hi,
Can anyone advise me on the good points or bad points on the 1.9 GTi TDI 115 .
As there is a nice one at my local dealership at the right price.... think I'm gonna get it.

Cheers

Hi Nessy.

I have the 150bhp PD150 GTi diesel, which I guess isn't gonna be drastically different from the one you're looking at, other than a bit of extra 'go'.

My advice to you is test drive it over a mixture of roads. The good points about the Mk IV will become clear instantly - well sorted interior made of quality materials, comfort, quietness and, with that engine, effortless, turbocharged urge.

You need to drive it with some 'spirit' (ie give it some welly) across the twisty stuff to see if you can handle the Mk IV's archilles heel - its handling.

They have plenty of grip, but they do lean a great deal, and the steering lacks feel - it doesn't really inspire confidence to press-on on a twisty road - a Mk II this is not.

Ultimately it will all depend what you currently drive, and what you're looking for in a car. If you're after a quick, comfortable, well-built and genuinely desirable car, you won't go wrong with the Golf. If you're looking for something that's gonna 'rock your world' across the back roads, you will be disappointed.

If you have your heart set on a back road stormer but really want that Golf, there IS a solution - budget in ?600 for a set of coilovers. You'll have one of the best handling Mk IV's out there, and retain all the positive elements of the car too.

Hope you join 'the club'!

Thanks for the reply,
Well if I wasn't sure before I am now.... great reply BTW - you should write reviews  ;)
At the moment I am driving a Alfa156 veloce T spark job. Although I love the styling of the motor etc I would like something I can chuck about a bit. Gonna call and book a test drive today.

Cheers

From what i heard mk4s have the same suspension problems as mk3s, too much roll etc. The standard suspension on my vr6 was terrible until i changed it. Just budget some extra cash for a decent suspension kit.

I would keep the original dampers and get some Eibachs fitted to make it handle a bit better.
