Is the play in the tie rods, rack or steering joint?
Remove the lower cover in the drivers foot well and check the steering column universal joint as they are known to wear causing play,
You can also check the tie rod by holding the big nut part that screws into the rack ( will be covered by the boot ) and the actual tie rod and have some one move the wheel left-to right and see if the tie rod is moving in the cup.
Might be easier if you slide the boot further along the tie rod.
Once you have ruled out the tie rod and steering column you can start considering the rack,
I had the same problem, my steering was loose as hell, I replaced the tie rods which helped slightly but didnt cure it.
My steering was always off centre whilst driving, even after have tracking and alignment done.
After replacing my rack with a reconditioned unit the steering was back to normal
