Windscreen chip - Replacement/repair
« on: 14 September 2012, 09:26 »
Just got a bloody chip today on the windscreen! I think it can be repaired, but it's probably about 2 inches from the edge.

I've heard replacement windscreens from 3rd parties aren't that great. Something about the seal not being as good? What would you suggest guys?

Get VW to sort it and pay a fortune, or get Autoglass or someone to carry out the repair and just pay the excess? Anyone know how much a windscreen would cost from VW?

Cheers guys
Darren

If you go to VW they will only get Autoglass or another company to come out and do it. And if you think about it, would you prefer a VW monkey who's never done a windscreen before in his life to have a go, or would you prefer a guy who's replaced windscreens every day of his life for the last 20 years to do it?

Go through your insurance / Autoglass and request a genuine OEM windscreen quote "for safety / noise / insulation" and a few other keywords like that and chances are they will order a VW screen in for you.

I got one replaced on my MK5 by Autoglass, it was a genuine VW one as it had the mark on the bottom right.

Guy did a great job too, but it depends on the fitter I suppose.

I had my screen replaced under warranty. It was delaminating. The dealers brought my car over to Autoglass to do the job. There's no way they'd attempt it themselves. They did a perfect job. There's no way you'd ever tell mine was replaced. 100% spot on. The glass even has the VW markings on it and they replaced the side rubber moldings (along the A-pillars).

Thanks guys for your replies. This fills me with a bit more confidence. Gonna see if it can be repaired first, but preparing for the worst.

I'm sure I read on here that you can request a genuine VW one as opposed to a copy. It may cost more though.
