Removing Wax
« on: 12 September 2012, 16:00 »
Ok i want to remove the old layer of wax from the cars that i will be detailing over the next couple of weeks. I have seen that some detailers use washing up liquid to strip the old wax layers on the car.

I know that using a clay bar will do this as well but my question is, is it safe to use the washing up liquid to help remove the majority of the wax?

Worst thing to use on a car is washing up liquid, because it can cause car to rust and strips shine, something to do with salt?

There are proper paint renovators and wax cleaners that Meguiars and even AutoGlym do on the shelf, so you dont have to buy a trade product.

I'd just clay them tbh mate, not only will it strip the wax but also lift the bonded contaminates ready for polishing which washing up liquid won't do, Just my 2p

the myth over washing up liquid isnt as bad as what is made out, its ok to use occassionally, but there is better out there, i agree with majority though, clay bar is the best option :-)

if you're detailing then i would clay... build it into the cost of your details, it won't remove all the wax but it would remove the majority of it

if you're polishing as well then this would remove any remaining wax

if you wanted to be sure then you could pre-spray or snowfoam with some kind of APC solution like CG Citrus wash or one of the AutoSmart dewaxers like Safe T Strip http://www.autosmart.co.uk/Dewaxers.html

WUL contains something along the lines of about 2% sodium laurel sulphate which is held in solution to thicken the liquid. I wouldn't use it myself but of course it is up to you.

Ye I was going to clay the car but wanted to use the e washing up liquid as I may miss a spot.

U I will be cleansing it with SN micro prime as gonna give it a proper polish after the winter season as I know I will get a lot more swirl marks then.

Give it a good spray with some strong APC and or some well concentrated snow foam as Guy suggested
