To replace the glass on an iPhone 3G, I bought a replacement glass "digitiser" from this guy on ebay http://stores.ebay.co.uk/xtech

In the process of swapping it over, managed to put a little too much pressure on the LCD (you have to detach the glass from the LCD to replace it) and broke it. So had to buy a new LCD.
I got one from Amazon. Here's the links to the two I bought (bought the wrong one first)

iPhone 3G LCD screen

iPhone 3GS LCD screen

So, in total it cost about £30 due to replacing the LCD, but that's still cheaper that paying someone like Apple to do it for you.

I asked this question the other week.

If you had the phone on O2, go to their website and go to help section, then ask one of the online advisers, they will ask for your O2 account details, then the unlock process will start. Once it's done (it only took 30min for me), they'll text you, you then put the new SIM (non-O2) in the phone, connect the phone to your computer and start iTunes, the phone will now be unlocked by iTunes (via the Apple servers).
If the iPhone wasn't originally on O2, contact the helpdesk of the network who originally supplied the phone.
If you got the phone from someone else, you'll have to use a phone unlocking service, there are plenty online who will do it for a fee.

There is some good videos on the Icracked website. They are on YouTube. I replaced my sons iphone 4 screen a month ago. Bought a screen with the screw drivers in the kit. It is fiddly but just watched and paused video and completed it in about 30mins. Looks good now in blue. If its just the back case it's only 2 screws.
