Anybody owned a Boxster 3.2 S 987?
« on: 11 September 2012, 14:25 »
Hello all,

I have sold my Civic Type R and contemplating buying a Porsche Boxster 3.2 S (the 987 shape). I am going to look at one tomo and have read lots of reviews online however most of them seem to say they are good and reliable.

Has anybody had one and know any common issues to look for?

I will obviously be giving it a good check over before parting with any cash but anybody know anything specific?

Btw i dont need any hairdresser / poor man porsche jokes :)

Thanks

Mike

Isn't that a hairdressers car?

I've driven my mother in laws 3.2 Boxster and it was half decent chassis, although still felt under powered. Couldn't tell you whether or not it was a 987.

She may have had a dud one, but for a car with only 51k on the clock, I was surprised to see that it had its first head gasket replaced at 33k by the prefious owner, at a cost of £1150 and then a second gasket at 50k at a further cost of £1400...

Hmmm... The one i am looking at is a 2006 which is the second shape made which seems to have less issues. It doesnt sound good if that one has had all those issues!

The book 0-60 is 5.4seconds which cant be too sluggish.

Its not too sluggish but when you consider you can buy a mkv gti and mod it for under ten grand and produce a faster car, then it becomes a no brainer.

Remap, fmic, tbe, induction system, hpfp and a few traction mods and you can achieve 160mph+ 0-60mph in well under 5 seconds and far better mid range power delivery. The Boxster block only produces 220lbft, whereas the Gti is capable of 260-300lbft, or more if you tighten the waste gate rods on the turbo.

My Gti is almost exactly the above, less a hpfp and will clock a 40-140mph time in just over 23 seconds, some 8 seconds quicker than the Boxster 3.2s. And go from 0-100mph in under 11 seconds, 3 whole seconds quicker than the 3.2s.

Here's some links to prove it...

And the best thing about it all, the Gti's running cost will be far less than the Porsche, regardless of mods.

What sort of an idiot would try and justify getting a Golf GTI over a Boxter?

Oh hang on....

Biggest thing to look out for IIRC are oil leaks, because they're normally crank or gearbox seals, which are an engine and gearbox out job.

Go spend some time on a Boxter forum is probably the best suggestion, but Porsches have a reputation as tough things.

Far more aristocratic choice than some front wheel drive hatchback and the handling will be proper.  Do it.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Thanks DH. I had read about the oil leaks so it's something to look out for. I am now on a boxster forum.

I can see that a modified golf would produce more power but it's not all about that for me. I have had a gold gti and civic type r so I'm done with hit hatches for now anyway.

I will post back with a build thread and repair thread when it all goes wrong!
