Engine changes on mk2 golf gti...? mmmh ?
« on: 07 July 2005, 00:20 »
Just wondering .....

How much realistically would it cost to put a 20valve turbo engine from a mk4 into a mk2... and what would be involved?

I have this notion that in a mint / stock 3dr .. that would be the absolute don of motoring... a true astonisher to the modern road muscle... and in our favorite body..

Lets indulge.. :)

It would involve a hell of a lot of work!
New CUSTOM engine mounts, extensive welding, making your own parts  :undecided: and to get it running with the exisitng controls and dials would be virtually impossible, you'd need to add a new dash and wiring loom.
Have a look in the Dub section, particularly Dizzie's car.  He's got a 3 door with an Audi 1.8 or 2.0 Turbo engine under the bonnet.
I'd also expect to pay around 2-3 thousand, maybe more! Unless you've already got the lump!

think its about 5k fitted

ive heard its easy to mount the engine but a b!tch when it comes to wiring and exhaust parts. Fit a mk4 dash aswel. would be easier.

no offence mate but thats arse. its easy to get it in and plumbed in but like blue said its the wiring thats a nightmare. the best way is to get an engine with the complete loom, clocks, keys etc. the problems normally come when you don't have the wiring loom to the dash and no keys as the factory immobiliser is a bastard to by-pass. which is why most people ditch it and use stand alone engine management from someone like DTA but that can bump the cost up loads. engine can be bought cheap-ish but its the wiring that you have to shell out for. another way of getting round it is if the base car is a digifant then there is a compnay called QPEng who will adapt a brand new loom to fit the digifant ECU and throw in an upgrade so its 200bhp out the box. the loom costs over a grand plus vat though.
bear in mind if your going to put that kind of power in an old car there will be alot of things that need upgrading/replacing to cope with it. brakes for starters, easiest thing is to use g60 brakes off a corrado.

to pay someone to do it its around £4-5k DIY alot less if you've got the know how! also this conversion is becoming so popular now so the mistakes have been made and installs should be easier for a good tuning company.

Sorry not got back sooner folks...

sounds a tricky job... as soon as you get computers / ems stuff in then its a sod then..

Whats the best engine conversion in your opinion then folk? - cheap, reliable with good amount of wellie  and torque + and some reasonable fuel economy? Or is that a stupid question ... like where is the holy grail.

Cheers

Don't know if it's still available, but there was a diy guide in the special edition mag 'ultimate golf' I think it was called, published as a one off by performance VW i tink (or was it golf+ anyone?) there is a good write up with pics, tips etc. has detail of a company that will supply a modified 20vt loom or modify yours for you. Called Qtech or something. (too much ale this weekend!?)

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.
