Another Ouch moment.
« on: 07 September 2012, 21:43 »
So there I was on my way home, went over a sleeping policeman (in 1st gear barely hiting 3mph) and i hear a god awful bang!

I first thought it was ether my secondary air pump due to hearing a horrible wine noise and I recently repaired it.
Or my wheel had come loose or something.

I pulled off the road straight away and knocked the engine off.

Had a look around the car and wheels where fine so time to lift the bonnet and im greeted with this......

Turns out for some compeletly unknown reason, my drivers side Engine mount & bolts had SNAPPED! causing my engine to drop!

The engine mount was leaning right on my timing belt, hence the wining noise.

So my car was taken away from me

Got a phonecall two days later and they tell me as we suspected, my engine mount had snapped and left bolts in the block.
they tell me in order to repair it, if will require a brand new mount costing around £100 inc vat and then 16 hours laybour @ £42 per hour due to the fact that my engine needs to be removed from the car in order the drill out the old bolts and replace the old snapped mount costing a total of £928 inc VAT!!

As you can imagen after just parting with the best part of £600 for my MOT and £400 for wheels and tyres I was ready to cry as to be fair I don't have that kind of money.

So at that point I told them that I would ring them back.

I was faced with a extremely difficult point hear, do I let the car go and call it a day or try and get the funds from "somewhere"
As I need a car to get to work the only opition I could see if I got rid was to get a new car on finance and go into alot of debt.

Or do I pay out as I have already almost replaced everything on this car already I have spent a good £2000-£3000 on this car since I have had her.

Then my misses said something "babe why don't I just lend you the money and you pay me back bit by bit as I know you love that car, save you going into more debt than you need to"

I look at her like a kid does when he gets his sega megadrive for xmas with sonic 1 (back in the 90's)

I then rang my local garage to check prices and see if they could do it any cheaper and his answer was "to be fair mate I could only do it a couple hundard cheaper but cnt look at it till next week"

So I decided to try my luck and give my car one chance to live on, I rang the garage back that has my car and told them I have had a cheaper quote and they matched it so its costing me £766 now

I know to most of you your gunna say OMG your getting ripped off but due to the ammount of work involed and checking with a coupe of garages to see if I was getting ripped off they all seemed around the £700-£1000 mark and yes i know a few hundard more I could prob get another GTI but as I'm sure most will understand this is my GTI there are many like it but this one is MINE ;)

Anyway thats my story this week, now I need to save for the next problem

Well the guy that recovered me said "Arhhh this is a common fault, have you recently had a cambelt done?"

I was like yeaaaasss how do you know?

he said "Well alot of people don't know this but when you have your belt done apart from the water pump you should also get the bolts from the engine mount replaced as they strech over time and then can easyly snap"

Lession for us all there...
