Odd steering since fitting 8j wheels
« on: 07 September 2012, 19:51 »
Just took my jetta for its first motorway run since fitting the 8j ET20 wheels
Between 60mph and 70mph I get steering wheel wobble
As feels abit floaty at speed aswell.
Is that normal once fitted wide wheels with poke?

Take them to a garage and get them balanced.

As above plus I assume the centre bore on the wheels is correct or you have at least got spigot rings to correct it?

NON power steering i am guessing ?

mine is a pig with the bigger wheels on ( and mine are small compared to yours )

tram lines like made in the ruts

and a small amount of play is a killer

They are brand new wheels with brand new stretched tyres freshly balanced with spigot rings.

It also goes wide around tight corners but that's to do with the much wider offset I recon.
Yeah at speed there is some play in the steering.

Anytime you touch the suspension or change wheels you must get the camber and tracking checked.

I haven't touched the suspension just put new wheels on. Didn't think that would change the setup?

Had the same mine but all I did was fit pas and put everything back the same. Ended up changing the camber myself so the wheels are straight and now it doesn't float around corners. I'm assuming that the stretch tyres on yours have little rubber actually touching the road?

Mine are 8j wheels with 185 45 tyres so it's not stupid amount of stretch.

Get the tracking and camber checked.  It may be that putting your incorrect-sized tyres on your rims has increased the perceived sensitivity to tramlining, as the sidewalls can't flex like they normally would.

Put the old wheels and tyres back on, see if that makes any difference.

Wheel wobble sounds like something's not straight and true.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
