squeeeeeeeeeeling fan belt!!
« on: 31 August 2012, 13:18 »
my 8v digi has a squeeling fan belt for some time now, very embarrassing :embarrassed:, and I need to get it resolved once and for all!
I have done the usual things to get it to stop but no joy!! ie tighten the belt, replaced the belt.
thinking the pulleys are worn! but wondering which one would be the problem without changing them all or should I just change them all.

Also does anyone know where to get a replacement crankshaft pulley other than from vw?
thanks in advance

Try sanding the pulleys where the belt connects before looking to replace.

tried sanding them also, I even thought of putting chisel marks in them but thought I shouldn't need to do that!
Its been happening for about a year!!!

I just need to get it resolved as my neighbours growl at me on the way to work at 7.30am!!!!

Dunno if it will work or not - but an OLD Mechanic mate of my dads used to suggest putting a bar of soap on the belt to stop them squealing... Just a thought!!

Or try holding a candle to it for wax, another tip from an old mechanic of mine :]

I know what you are saying guys for a temp fix that's ok but i don't want this to come back even if the noise wasnt there the belt would still slip and it effects the running and charging of the car.

This is a non pas setup with the water pump and alt pulleys being pushed around with the crankshaft pulley pushing the belt around so its the crankshaft pulley that's giving me the problem right?

I'm no mechanic - but I would guess it could be any of the pulleys, or the water pump bearings or the alternator bearings if you may have over tightened the belt...

why not try he soap/wax and see if it stops it... If it don't work then try the next step...

Just a quick shot of WD40 is all thats required, to determine whether its just the belts or something more sinister,
Cheap quality belts can also be a problem, or simply you've not got enough tension dialed in yet...
Also check that your battery is not on its last legs, this could be putting the alternator under excessive loads, causing the belt to slip
