VR6 all day mate, you can pick up a high line for less than a grand at the moment and with a few, not too expensive mods, you can nearly see the 200bhp mark, dicks all over the valver
Yes they are slightly more expensive to run than the 16v but not so much that it bothers me.
VR for the win

Well once I sell my 1.8t, I should have around £1500/1600 to spend.

Need to start looking around. Still torn between the anni and vr6 now

If you are planning on keeping it standard (maybe just a cheeky drop on the suspension) then the Annie could be a good investment, if however, you are wanting to mod the car I wouldn't bother with an Annie, I think they should be left as original as possible.
I am obviously biased since I own a VR, but you could pick up quite a tasty one for that sort of money, I can't help thinking you would be slightly disappointed with the Valver performance after your 1.8T

I did think this myself. Is your mk4 standard?

Completely standard yes, brought it un-modded and kept it that way. Does pull very well and I got to 120mph on the motorway last month and it would of kept going, so still got good top speed.

What is the VR6 like then for power? Always liked the sound of them

Dude stick with the 16v. I own one and have just had the head port and gas flowed, which is a cheap mod and the only real mod required for this car. Will be fitted in the next week or so. Its a true sports car hence why it is called a gti. The vr6 are nice, but don't offer much bhp for such a big engine, esp when compared to the 16v. Mine will be pushing 180-185 bhp with the above work and a chipped ecu and this is what a big lump 2.8 vr6 pushes. I have now owned mine for 4 yrs and the engine has done 190,000 and still is bullet proof. I have owned a mk4 gti turbo and feel it was sh!te in comparsion.

Sorry mine will be pushing 180bhp max. To get more than 180bhp would require more work such as uprated cams and ITB's with an adjustable ecu, which I won't do due to cost and the fact it still would struggle to get close to 200bhp.

Prepare to be disappointed.
A ported head on an ABF will not give you 30 BHP.

Mk3 a true sports car? Um..OK.
