Hello! Fuel lift pump query,,,
« on: 27 August 2012, 17:26 »
Hi Guys, new to the site and mk2 ownership . this ones been off the road for 3 years. '87 GTi

Think its got a faulty fuel lift pump (3 pin one) - are these easy to get hold of? Also, the car does not register any fuel on the fuel guage - this is linked to the lift pump? Would replacing just the pump fix this or is the whole unit to be replaced?

I understand theres 2 pumps - I cant here the tank lift pump on ignition turn on so that makes me think its faulty. Plus car wont start despite turning with a spark.

Sorry for all the questions lol. Thanks !

It could be the fuel pump relay 167 or 88. The lift pump is available from VW for around £50, the lift pump and float are accessible through the boot.

The in tank pump is a lot cheaper than the main pump, so hopfully its that one. If your buying either, check out euro car parts, and use the forum discount code for 25% off, which can be found in the relevant section.

As said, The in tank pump is accessed under the round metal plate on the boot floor (under the carpet). Remove the plate, then the hoses and plug, then unscrew the plastic cap to remove the pump and fuel gauge assembly. Its dellicate, be careful. The float is for the fuel gauge.

For testing, just remove the fuel hoses once you take the metal plate off under the carpet, and turn the ignition on and off with the electrical plug still attached, to see if it pumps out fuel.

Could be an issue with the plug if your fuel gauge is not working too, as the tank pump and gauge are on the same one?? Also make sure there is plenty of fuel in the tank. When my pump was on the way out, the car would run when the tank was over half full, as the pump was doing less work to lift it out.

If that ones working, check the main pump. Its in the black plastic box under the car, infront of the fuel tank. I think it runs on ignition turn on too? So get someone to turn ignition on/off, while you feel the pump housing for a tell tale vibration/humm of it running.

good luck

Hi - Had a play this evening...

The pump under the car seems to run when the ignition is turned on so I looked in the boot...

The pipe from lift pump to second pump was blocked so I cleared that. Then I tested the lift pump on a battery and it gave no response at all so I would say that is probably knackered.

The lift pump mechanism/assembly is also in a poor (but possibly recoverable) state. Really I would like a new fuel lift pump, assembly and seal. The part number of the assembly is 191919051AP. Following a google search it appears that the number part is similar for all diffrent kinds of Golfs (e.g Diesle, carb, etc) i cant find much on an 'AP' one.

Can someone here confirm the part number on there lift pump assembly? Really I presume I just need to find a three pin one as the 4 pin and 3 pin suit post '90 GTi and Diesels?

Would be great if someone had a spare good condition assembly? Thanks in advance! Luke

Hi - thanks - I think the post '90 models had 4 pin lift pumps and these are diffrent units. If its a 3 pin one I would be very interested!
