After spending the last 18 months or so with a Passat 2.8 syncro as my extremely thirsty daily , I've finally got myself another Golf Gti . This one is Gti no5 for me and the 2nd Mk4 I've owned so I'm hoping this one can be as reliable and enjoyable as my past cars.
Car is a 2002 Gti 1.8 AUM in indigo blue with 89k , FVWSH , 2 owners and a shed load of receipts . Picked it up yesterday and it's pretty straight bodywork is mint just a bit dirty under the bonnet. Whilst test driving it the thermostat packed in temp kept dropping below 90 as soon as there was air flow . The dealer didn't have a clue as hed taken it in p/x for a mk5 only a few days ago so I managed to knock off £545 !!!!! I managed to catch the nice chaps at GSF Shrewsbury bang on closing time and pick up a new stat , coolant etc. The manager kindly fitted my new wipers too !!!
The 45 mile trip home which would have averaged 26 mpg in the Passat averaged almost 40 mpg it almost feels like I'm getting free fuel

As far as Im aware its standard but having owned two mk5s in the past this one pleasantly surprised me on how well it picks up. Plans at the minute are fix the stat !! Give it a clean replace the hoses , tpi etc and then look at a remap once I've ironed out any niggles .
I'll get some pics posted later once I've fixed the stat .
Cheers
Paul
