how much does a DSG affect the fuel economy

Diesel Autos are as bad on fuel as petrol manuals  :lipsrsealed:

If it's a daily don't be scared of looking at slightly more obscure models such as Boras/Jettas. They might not look as "cool" but will likely be cheaper to insure and are often cheaper to buy despite having more equipment as standard. They drive just like the equivalent Golf and nobody wants to nick them...

Keeping schtum. Mostly.

The point of DSG is that it's not a conventional auto - the economy with DSG *should* be better than a manual.

I'd get a diesel, because even if you spank it you won't get spanked on the fuel bills.  When we test drove a G6 GTI it did 14MPG.  No matter how hard I spank our 4Mo Passat it won't return lower than about 28MPG.  If you get even remotely frisky with the throttle you are punished hard in a petrol.  Diesel you're not.

Add to that modern petrol engines rev like diesels and modern diesels rev much harder than diesels used to and you're in a world gone so mad that we won't spank the monkey, the monkey will spank us.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

This

Doing a 1000 miles a month, diesel becomes your only option.  The only reason id buy a petrol now would be as a weekend toy and that isnt going to happen anytime soon

If you are looking within the VAG group then the 140 is the best all rounder out of the box.  It depends how far you want to take things  :lipsrsealed:

Witting a diesel without gettig it mapped

Well I'm used to between 150-180 bhp so anythig around that area I would be happy with. Especially with the torque

The GTI on a manual box is capable of 45mpg if tickling the throttle on a motorway...around the 60-65mph range.  Don't forget about the Seat FR's...diesels are still quick and are less to insure and cheaper to buy.

If its the only car you are going to have I'd got with the GTi as remapped they are very capable, but even without they are a good solid fun car, and one I miss.  With either check the air-con!!!  Compressors are very prone....
