Diesel or Petrol
« on: 24 August 2012, 18:15 »
So got a new job will be doing more miles roughly 800-1000 a month

Looking to spend between £5-8k. VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda (dont really fancy a bmw or any other cars)

Never really driven a diesel but heard they can be very good.

What sort of mileage would you have to do before u considered a diesel ?

Thanks guys

1, DIESEL will be a must - unless you got shares in Esso.  I am hitting 1k a month minimum and would be fcuked if still running a petrol

2, need a LOT more info before being able to commit

   a, budget
b, other family requirements / practicalities
c, lot term plans for it

thats just the start

Do I really want to cross over to the dark side  :lipsrsealed:

Budget is 5-9k

Thinking mk5, then just lower, remap. Nothing major. Just a nice sensible daily

And no family commitments atm too young for any of that

1, my diesel is my FAST car

2, means your SLOW AND LOW project will be even more enjoyable to drive  :smug:

3, DONT LOWER IT - i left my daily standard - its a daily - get a toy to tinker with  :lipsrsealed:

4, 6k on a decent daily, left over for ya toy

The petrol v diesel debate comes in when you are buying a new car.  iirc its about 20K miles a year to make diesel the better option.

It takes into account higher list price, diesel being more expensive, and repair costs if things go wrong engine related.

If it's a used car*, then diesel.

* provided it's recognised as a reliable engine.

Thanks mate. Knew I had read something like that somewhere.

I think by the time I add on personal miles, shows etc then diesel will be more practical. As its not massive mileage I can get a fairly decent (speed wise) dirty diesel which I will be happy with.

I can't slate the diesels too much as I haven't driven one personally, my brothers both have diesels and seem happy. Ones a mk5 the other a jag x type.

A lot smoother and quieter than I was expecting which is good

Got my weekend sorted then ( car shopping )

For your budget don't dismiss a Honda Accord 2.2 EX tdi.  I had one on a 55 plate, fantastic motorway cruiser averaging about 55 mpg, and was fully loaded with everything as standard. Heated leather, sunroof, 6 disc cd etc......

Look for the HFT sat nav ones.
