ive managed to get my fan working now so i thought id give an update incase anyone else gets the same problem.
fault was none of the speeds would work. in the end i got a multimeter to check if there was any live going to all the parts and there was. i tested the resistor out in my mates car and that worked. i also connected the fan up straight to a 12v supply and the fan was working. in the end the problem was a faulty ground cable. so if anyone ever gets the same problem, check your fuse and then your ground cable:)
