NEED HELP on Buying a previously imported V5
« on: 04 July 2005, 15:37 »
Hello everyone....

I am looking to buy a mk4 V5 and have seen one that I like but have a couple of queries that hopefully someone could shed some light on.

Firstly the car is an import from Belgium, it has an english spec and the guy selling it is the person who actually purchased the car form new, is there any risk in buying a pre import and is ther anything I should look out for in particular?

Secondly although its a V5, the badge on the back is a GTI. Is this because it was made in belgium and they badge them up differently?? Or is this a bit dodgy??

And thirdly how can I tell if it is a 150BHP or 170BHP Model? I know its something to do with the amount of valves but can you tell by looking at the engine block?

Thanks for looking and look forward to anyones reply.

Just go to your local VW dealership with the reg or chassis number and they can tell you exactly what it is.  Imports are fine to buy, there are a lot of them about, it was probably first registered in the uk anyway.

Went there and they told me that they dont do that sort of thing, and they reffered me to the aa. I said it was just to find out what the car is not any history on it but they declined and said they dont do that sort of thing.
Are they telling porkies???
Or is there a special way of asking for it?

Some times if imported the reg doesn't come up on uk vag computers if this happens find out yoru engine code and ring with that or you might even find someone who knows what it is, I know where there is a list of engine codes and bhp for all the 1.8's I am sure you can find out very easy.
Good luck

Need the chassis number mate, tried the reg number you gave me, but VW computers have no record of it .  Could be because its a private plate tho,  Try to get the chassis number on the weekend and I'll find out on Mon

Done the chassis number, no joy, he said that if it is an import and has not been to vw for serviceing then it won't be on thier system :undecided:
