I just got back from there.

Drove my Type R through England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland an Italy.

Venice is ok for the day but wouldnt want to stay there. I stayed at Camping Ca Savio which is a great place! Also visit Lake Garda, very nice.

The canals stink a bit and there's lots of beggars (when I went in 2005)
Other than that it's good!

I went for my honeymoon earlier this month and I loved it!

The canals don't stink unless your very very enclosed, the beggars are pretty much gone apart from the odd one or 2 about the place, be prepared to punch a few rose sellers if you go out anywhere at night, it took me screaming in their face to piss off!

The thing I really wanted to go on but didn't as we went very last minute was the Venice by night walking tour. Let me know what's it like if you go on it!

Practically, get a pass 3day pass for the vaparetto water bus tings, they go all over the show. Use the airport shuttle to come in from the airport, was €15 I think.

Go on a gondola, at night it's awesome and a lot quieter
f**k museums, the whole place is living history and just wandering round getting lost will keep you busy and learning all sorts, and that fascinates me more than a museum of mainly religious tings.

We stayed at Hotel Savoia & Jolanda which was right next to the bridge of sighs, we had a suite overlooking the lagoon an a balcony which was awesome.

EVERYTHING is expensive, no exceptions. If you're walking about an fancy a drink, go in a shop or buy one off a seller, neh the cafes, Feckers will take €4 for water or upto €7 for a coke!

Oh and atleast €100 for half an hour on a gondala!

Enjoy it mate!

Skoda Rapid Spaceback

An a Signum for towing me old caravan!

I paid 80 euros for 40mins on a gondola. Your best of finding one on the back streets. The grand canal is just busy with other traffic. You see much more on the side streets.

Venice is a great place to visit.
We went for 4 days, and still didn't see everything we could have done.

If you have the money (and want to be romantic) go on a gondola, otherwise, it's just a very expensive boat.

Tips:
1) You will walk a lot, take comfy shoes
2) Use the water taxis/buses (vaporetto), they will take you longer distances
3) If you fly, the airport is on the mainland, but you can get a boat from there across to the main island which is a great way to arrive.
4) There's a church round every corner, most of them are open to the public and are very pretty, just be respectful. (We found one with an Exhibition of Da Vinci inventions, which was cool)
5) Explore the other islands including Murano and the Lido (if you want a beach this is where to find it)
6) Pizza and ice cream from street vendors is tasty and cheaper than restaurants if you want something during the day.

We had no problems with beggars.
The canals don't stink, they've done a lot in the past few years to clean it up, it's only on seriously hot days in enclosed spaces where it might smell a bit and if you're going in October, that's not going to be a problem.

I found St Mark's square disappointing at night, it was dark and empty for some reason.

Enjoy it.
