Hi all, those of you who've read my posts of late might know I've had some issues with my gearbox on my Anni 8v since buying, which started off as a `unable to select 1st without double clutching' type thing.  It seems to have progressed into a worse state today, with me now unable to get it into 5th, and coming down from 4th to 3rd becoming extremely tough.

Anyway, I've had the car into Mr Clutch in Enfield today who have (for free) played around with the selection rods, and greased it up a bit, took it out for a road test and come back with worse/best case scenarios.  They said the gearstick was off centre and might just need adjustment, which they did, but to no avail.

So now, I have reverse, 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th only, 1st will not select at all now, not even with double clutching.

Cost to get the gearbox repaired - circa £600 for a new unit, and they also recommended getting the clutch done at the same time to make use of the labour costs, circa £800 all in.  They say the would need the car for about 3 days.

Now, I'm no expert, but this seems a ridiculous amount of money, almost what I paid for the car...

Is there any way I can avoid this huge bill, the car is driving fine other than first gear, but I am told that to do even an inspection on a box, you might as well recondition the whole thing due to the amount of time it would take to get it off, open it up, and check it.

I can potentially get the current box reconditioned by a garage that has been recommended plus the clutch for about £650.

I've also seen gearboxes on Ebay for sale at £150 - but if I went and bought this, which garage would agree to fit it, without knowing if it was in good enough condition.

Has anyone got anything thoughts / recommendations on the above?  I'm not a mechanic so please be gentle with your replies.

Cheers, AL.  (North London)
