Renault R26.R upgrade or dowgrade - join in ;-)
« on: 17 August 2012, 12:53 »
will be donating it to the wife and buying an R26.R before much longer.

Impeccable choice!
One hell of a drivers car

I would have to agree, but I would like to know the tuning capabilities of this car?

I've had two Renault's previously, one Clio and one Megane. Although French built and consequently retarded, the driveability of both cars was fantastic. Both had lovely light and responsive steering, generally gave good feedback and never gave up on a corner. So I can only imagine that the R26.r is absolutely mind boggling round corners!

Also, when this car set the record for fastest lap at the Nurbugring, for a front wheel drive car. Was that time only taking into account stock cars? I ask this, because I assume that this car would be no match for a fine tuned mk5/6 Gti?

Sorry that this is completely off topic....

it had the lap record for FWD production cars only beaten by the newer 265 cup

a GTI would need some serious fettling to get anywhere near it and IMO it couldnt beat it on track. The golf just isnt that sort of car. its giving away 250kg and 20bhp for a start and the megane has a properly tuned chassis and brakes that actually work where the golf isnt made for that.

regarding tuning the megane is a tune-able as anything else 2 litre and turbo charged. its not really in need of any fettling though as its already done for you.

Hope the split makes sence

I love the way these renaults drive, the weight has masses (no pun) to do with it IMHO - monster out of the box

The Gti is no track legend, and the Renault would run rings around it...not really much to discuss.

Downgrade for me, no comfort or luxury or practicality, don't really see the point of this  point of this car, yes great for going round a corner flat out etc but how many times have or would you do that. I wouldn't be surprised if 99% of people have never even pushed their gti to the limits and to top it off it is has got a ugly rear, a Big Batty Gal

I have to agree, as a whole package the Golf is a league above. And it's not French.

Had a Clio 197 score the golf and it was an awesome handling car, thought about a new one but had so many issues with reliability it put me off. I think it's. Dry hard to compare the two as the r26.r is such a track derived motor and is awful on the road. Knew people that owned them and they sold them very soon as the harness were awkward, the seats were uncomfortable and the road legal slicks were dangerous.

I would definitely buy one but only as a weekend toy, would keep it mint, wouldn't put a radio in like most have and would definitely make sure it had the titanium exhaust as it sounds amazing.

For me it would not be as good for the primary role I bought the Mk6 for.
As a second car I could see the attraction.
