Grinding/knocking when accelerating
« on: 16 August 2012, 21:11 »
Hi all

I have an 1990 8v GTI

Over the past few weeks I have noticed a bit of a knocking sound when I floor it/come on and off the throttle and sometimes when driving over bumps and potholes.  It is coming from near the passenger footwell and I initially thought it might be engine mounts going and causing the exhaust to knock however they were renewed only a few thousand miles ago.  I also wondered if it could be the gearbox mounts?  Tonight I floored it in 2nd and 3rd and in the high rev range there was a lot of knocking/grinding, not very loud but noticeable.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Pedro

Hi mate

Tried this, brought the clutch to biting point and no knock.... It seems to happen more often when the car is accelerating and going over potholes etc.

Likely to be worn lower ball joint or wishbone bushes, they knock when you coast over bumps or under soft accelerating/braking. Tie rods are more of a popping sound with vague steering. Top mounts creak as well as knock.

Hope you get it sorted!

It seems only to happen when the car is accelerating, ie not when coasting and going over bumps/pot holes.  If I floor the accelerator on a bumpy surface it gets significantly worse which makes me think engine/gearbox mounts?

Thanks

What downpipe/manifold?
Is this the same noise you posted about a while ago?

Just standard down pipe and manifold. Got exhaust hangers replaced and seems to be better.  The original sound I posted about is still present but very quiet, I had it looked over and there is nothing obvious just now.
