Theft: Reading Keys
« on: 16 August 2012, 18:08 »
Hi guys,

As my GTI was recently stolen ...without a noise ....in the middle of the night....under my open bedroomwindow....the police suspects that they probablyhave been "reading" my key with a laptop and so opened my car etc etc...

Now I am in the process of ordering the same one.....thinking as hell how to give my wife a bit more secure feeling (see is not happy with my idea...since 5 GTI's have been stolen in my neighbourhood.

I came up with the idea of opening my car with the key....so the old fashion inserting and twisting way.

Am I right in thinking that this is the way that thugs cannot pick up the important signal to open up my car.....

Any technical explanation on this subject is more than welcome...

You will struggle to open door with a key the lock is not exposed. How was your car stolen without a key.Even if access was gained one would struggle to start it without the physical attributes of a key?

i was under the impression that your key will never transmit the same information twice. it works on a rolling code.

if 5 GTIs have been stolen in your area in a similar way then i'm surprised the police aren't looking in to whoever is responsible for ordering keys at the local dealership!

Dealers should not code keys unless they have the actual car in, I learnt that the hard way when I lost my van keys!

Hi guys,

The car was stolen without my keys....so I am desperately searching for a method...to prevent this.

I overlooked the fact that the lock is not visible....dammm

I do not know what the police does...I honestly think....very little

I read a lot about how skillfull they are....hooking laptops on an odb or obd....it takes them 3 minutes to steal your car...without a noise....

Yes you are correct and my wife demands it....however she changed her mind quickly when I replied that they will simply ring our doorbell to ask for the keys...

and they need the V5 document too. the whole key process through vw is a bit of a ballache.. i wasn't seriously accusing them of thieving cars  it is possible to code a new remote that will disarm and unlock the car in just a few minutes though, provided you have access to the car with the ignition on. Immobiliser is not always so straight forward.

Hi Topher,

Howabout an old fashioned switch hidden in the car to switch things on/off...say fuel or ignition....

Hi Topher,

Howabout an old fashioned switch hidden in the car to switch things on/off...say fuel or ignition....

I was about to suggest that, one that i've seen used elsewhere (on an old morris minor ) was wiring the ignition live into the brake light circuit in conjunction with a hidden switch.

You can only start the car after having flicked the switch and whilst the brake pedal is pressed.
