Keeps turning...
« on: 15 August 2012, 13:46 »
...but never wants to start. Well not when its cold or wet or both in any case. 89 16v, dizzyless set up with twin Weber 45s and throttle bodies. Will turn over for ages but just will not fire. Periods of warm and dry weather (barring it going cooler overnight) it'll fire on the first turn of the key.
So far i've cleaned the coil pack, checked the leads are carrying a spark (check- oddly enough removing one caused it to start not so long back but never replicated this), replaced the crank sensor as it looked ropey, had new spark plugs as part of a service two months ago, checked fuelling is occurring (pump is running and fuel is sloshing through fuel lines) and bought a top notch Bosch battery. It did have an issue with water getting into the fuse box but leak was located and the fuse box was professionally stripped, cleaned and put back together. I've replaced the ignition relay too.

I've discounted knock sensor and failed coil pack as when its running its running sweet as a nut with no pinging or misfire under load, HT leads for the same reason.

On and off have had starting issues with this car for around twelve months and i'm a gnat's ballock from taking it up my garage and breaking it for spares.  Any help gratefully appreciated.

Nope its the original KR lump- converted to dizzyless at around the same time as being carbed by the look of the mounts and where they are. Coil pack seems to resemble the four and ignition port setup on a 1.6 Clio but that is my summising what i've seen.

I'm pretty sure that no mk2s had crank sensors however this engine is anything other than what VW put together. Mainly the reason i'm trying to eliminate all normal possibilities including known mk2 starting issues prior to pulling wiring out.

My mistake was jabbering- throttle bodies ala this setup

All day in the damp yesterday nothing. First turn of the key tonight relatively warm and dry and its alive

Well messed about with the various sensors on the TBs and low and behold, after bodging about the air temp sensor i've had two perfect cold/ wet starts. Fingers crossed for problem solved.
