If you ask me most people drive like tw*ts anyway so not smoking is hardly going to make everyone drive like an angel.

Smoking while driving is no where near as distracting as talking on a phone. It takes no concerntratio or effort and you can still keep both hands on the wheel when not taking drag.

Nick

Disagree.

There must be some concentration and effort. How are you getting the cigarette out? How are you lighting it? There must be at lease one hand that's not controlling the car at the time, exactly like using a phone.

Well I used to just light it and stub it out at a traffic light or something (hence not smoking on motorway or similar), and you only have to have one hand off the wheel briefly every so often to take a pull.

I suppose you have your hands at 10 to 2 100% of the time though?

or change the radio channel, point the vent a different way, adjust the rear view mirror or even change gears

Thats equipment of the car though.

This seems to be the sad truth :(

My one arguement against smoking in the car is what if you drop it when it's lit?

You can argue all you like that changing station, adjusting mirrors, etc is the same, but it isn't IF the fag drops from your chops whilst lit, instant panic sets in which will take ALL of your concentration off the road.

I smoke roll ups, I pre roll them and leave them by the speedo, when I want one I pick it up and light it then smoke.
If I drop it it's not that much of a fuss, the way I roll them they need regular pulls to keep them lit.

Smokers can still have their hands on the steering wheel when not taking a pull. I'd say when taking a pull on a fag you'll have only one hand on the wheel for that same amount of time that you would if changing gear.

Also, I'd be a worse driver if I had to go without a fag when driving. Drivers are thingys.

It has no effect on my ability to drive since quitting the nasty pointless exercise 2 weeks ago.

Your point being? The seat next to you is equipment of the car, but what you put in it isn't. So if your phone is there, you shouldn't touch it, if you put a laptop there, you shouldn't touch it.
