If you are that addicted/require a smoke that often you shouldn't be driving.

I think your on to something there...

You've payed for the car, if you want to smoke in it its your own choice.

Even if it's your car, you ought to be paying attention to the driving, rather than have a distraction.

Surely smoking in a car is almost as driving while on the phone...

Disagree with it totally. If you are that addicted/require a smoke that often you shouldn't be driving.

I agree with you. You cannot be in 100% control and focus of your car if you're also controlling a burning ember. Mobile phones is a bandwagon everyone jumps on, so it should be applied to ALL things that take your hand away from the car.

Smoking while driving is no where near as distracting as talking on a phone. It takes no concerntratio or effort and you can still keep both hands on the wheel when not taking drag.

Nick

Disagree.

There must be some concentration and effort. How are you getting the cigarette out? How are you lighting it? There must be at lease one hand that's not controlling the car at the time, exactly like using a phone.

What does piss me off is when smokers ask to smoke in non-smokers cars.. GTFO!

something i said on another forum a while back:

i smoke, and sometimes it has affected my driving, lit cigarettes dropped, brake immediately without looking, dont want to burn the seats or the jeans or the mat, feck everyone else, fling open doors and look for it before the car goes up in flames, a bit too many times (one of the reasons i am looking for a fire extinguisher)

i tend to have my cigarettes ready in the ash tray if i want one, usually when the car comes to a halt would i light a fag or get the passenger to do it for me, on certain occasions i have rolled a fag on the motorway doing 90, who cares, i need my nicotine fix

you can hold the steering wheel with both hands and still smoke, don't need any hands for smoking as long as one does not mind the smoke in their eye and causing a collision. i tend to keep the window open, have wind/rain deflectors so the window is open all the time i am driving it, even at 150mph, which creates a vacuum thereby sucking everything inside outside, and that helps when not using the hands to smoke.

i would not recommend doing it, its dangerous, but i cant help it, addicted to the nicotine

Well I used to just light it and stub it out at a traffic light or something (hence not smoking on motorway or similar), and you only have to have one hand off the wheel briefly every so often to take a pull.

I suppose you have your hands at 10 to 2 100% of the time though?

or change the radio channel, point the vent a different way, adjust the rear view mirror or even change gears

I smoke, although not while driving and wouldn't mind others smoking in my car. I've always been in the mindset that you should only be driving while driving an in the opinion that anyone who talks on their phone or txting whilst moving should be automatically banned for ten years. Not sure if i would apply that to smoking and driving but I guess the distractive principle is the same usually caused by dropping the stub on the floor or ash on your lap, there is going to be that momentary distraction where your eyes come right off the road.

Is this even a serious argument? I have always smoked in my car and not once has it caused a distraction.

This is in no way comparable to being on the phone, texting or the like.

I think adjusting the rear view mirror causes more distraction if anything!
